RS-200 Power Controller
Q&A
1. What is the RS-200 Device?
v It is a device that hooks up to your homes electrical system
and helps smooth out and optimize the overall efficiency of your electricity, and the electric motors in your home.
When a motor-driven appliance like a dishwasher turns on, it uses a burst of electricity that often goes to waste.
The RS-200 catches and holds the extra electricity and then releases it when another appliance needs it. As well
helping the motor the run more efficiently overall, therefore using less electricity.
2. Why have we not heard of this technology
before?
v The Technology has been around for years, used by both the
power companies and big industry. Because the savings are not as dramatic as in the commercial setting, it just was
not cost effective enough for residential and small businesses until the price of power became much more expensive
in the last 5 years or so. Now with the price of power where it is and going higher, it has become cost effective
when payback on the investment can be as little as 6 months to a year.
3. How does the RS-200 work?
v The Power Save 1200™ uses capacitors, a type of electrical
component that can store energy and then release it. Electrical companies use capacitors to smooth the flow of
electricity through the city power grid. Without capacitors, there would be major power surges and spikes that
could damage anything plugged into the grid. This technology also allows the RS-200 to work like the surge
protector for your home. Capacitors limit too much electricity from flowing at once, and store energy that would
otherwise be lost through heat. The RS-200 allows you to use electricity more efficiently.
4. How do I know if I am using electricity
efficiently?
v Your “power factor” is a measure of how efficiently your
home uses electricity for functional services. If your home has a power factor of 1, you are using 100% of the
electricity you pay for. With a power factor of 1, your appliances all do an amount of work equal to the amount of
electricity they use. Most homes have a much lower power factor due to the use of motor-driven appliances. These
appliances include dishwashers, air conditioners, dryers, refrigerators, and most other devices that do something
other than provide light or heat. Some motor-driven appliances have a power factor as low as 0.2. This means the
device only uses 20% of the electricity it takes to do its job. The rest is typically lost to heat. Remember, if a
motor is getting hot, it is using extra electricity to produce that heat.
v Each appliance in your house has a power factor of its own,
but your whole house has a power factor as well. This is calculated by adding all the power factors in your house
and then dividing by the number of appliances to get an average. Most homes have a power factor of 0.77. This means
that the appliances in the house use 77% of the electricity provided to perform their tasks, and use the remaining
23% to do something useless like create unneeded heat. The RS-200 helps smooth out the flow of power through your
home and prevent appliances from drawing power where it is not needed. The Power Save 1200™ can often raise a
home's power factor as high as 0.95.
5. Will the RS-200 work in my home?
v The power save 1200 will work in any modern home and most
older homes that use a circuit breaker box. The RS-200 will not work with electrical systems that use old-fashioned
fuses.
6. Who will benefit most from using the RS-200™?
v Almost any household can become more efficient and reduce
their power usage with the RS-200. If your house is larger than 2500 square feet, or you have a swimming pool or a
hot tub, the RS-200 can save you money. If your air conditioning system, heat pump, or furnace is more than 3 years
old, the RS-200™ can help them run more efficiently. If your home uses well water or air conditioning, the RS-200™
can make a difference. If you have any large appliance that is not Energy Star certified, including a dishwasher,
washer, dryer, freezer, refrigerator, the RS-200™ can help them run more efficiently. A home with an
older electrical system using fuses rather than more modern breaker will not benefit with a RS-200™ unit.
7. Who will not benefit from using the RS-200™?
v People who live in relatively small houses with only Energy
Star certified appliances, and do not have a pool, spa, well, or air conditioning, may not see much improvement on
their utility bill. The less motor-operated appliances or motors a home has then less it will benefit
in electricity cost savings. However, for the limited cost of the unit it is recommended for all homes as it does
give other benefits aside from simply reducing power consumption. It will protect the electrical devices in the
entire home from power spikes and voltage fluctuations, acting as a surge protector for the entire home. It will
also help increase the life of your appliances as it helps decrease the operating temperature of the appliances and
devices.
v The units will not benefit nor can be installed in a home
with an older electrical system using fuses rather than breakers.
8. Is the RS-200™ just for home use, or can I use it at work or
in the shop too?
v The RS-200™ is appropriate for single-phase electrical use
in homes, but there is also three-phase device suitable for commercial and industrial use, so you can get the same
benefits at a work place or larger facility with three-phase power.
9. Can I install it myself?
v Unless you are an electrician, we recommend professional
installation of the RS-200™. This normally takes less than 30 minutes.
10. How much money will it save?
v Depending on your home and power usage, you could see the
RS-200™ pay for itself within 4-12 months. Homes that are already fairly efficient may take 12-18 months to see a
return on their investment.
11. What if it doesn't work?
v The RS-200™ comes complete with a money-back guarantee
through BRT. If it doesn't make an impact on your electrical bill the first 1 Year, or you’re unhappy for any
reason, you can return it for on 100% refund. Unfortunately, we cannot refund the cost of installation and removal
of the unit.
12. How long will it last?
v The RS-200™ units Has a life expectancy of
20+ years, and come with a 20 year
manufacturer's warranty.
